Participants in the Fin5 Orienteering Week will be offered five very different types of orienteering competitions. Mid-distance races ask orienteers the ability to concentrate tightly and smoothly switch between orienteering techniques. Two long-distance races challenge their route choices and put endurance to the test. For the most part, the terrain is quite good in all races, although visibility varies greatly. The skill of slope orienteering will increase in value during the week. For all series, every race has been designed to provide access to the best parts of the terrain.

The dry summer has meant that the bogs are for the most part fairly hard-bottomed and well-run. In general, it is good to know that weaker paths and tracks have not been depicted on the maps, and some new animal paths have emerged only recently so that they have not been included on the map. However, these are not important for route choices or navigation, but it is mainly a good idea to be aware of their possibility.

Especially in middle distance races, you should be careful when coming to the cross, as there are very frequent crosses in all three terrains. The codes are printed on the map next to the serial number of the check marks, so checking is easy.

Although efforts have been made to draw children’s trails based on clear objects, especially in the vicinity of Meskusvaara, the vegetation is so dense in places that it can be difficult to perceive. With children navigating straight trails, it may be wise to repeat the orientation of the map with a compass.

Competition 1 – Kirintövaara Course Setters: Esa Mursu and Sanna Soudunsari (children).

The Fin5 Orienteering Week opens on the steep slopes of Kirintövaara. The woods are mainly northeastern candle spruce, which is crossed by ski slopes and trail bottoms. From a orienteeres point of view, the terrain requires approaches typical of Central European terrains; keeping the compass direction as well as perceiving and maintaining the level becomes unpredictable.

On the shortest adult lines, the ascent amount is not accumulated at all with faultless performance, as the starting points are near the peak of Kirintövaara. On longer and especially elite tracks, on the other hand, you are asked for gunpowder from the thigh, when the slope of danger is also pained uphill. However, remember to leave strength for future ascents as well! The children ‘s starting point is closer to the competition center at the foot of the danger, and there is more of an ascent. The trails rely on a network of pistes and ski slopes.
