Fin5 2020 Orienteering week will be organized in 2021 due to the coronavirus situation. Fin5 Orienteering Week will be held from 11 to 16 July 2021 in Posio and Kuusamo. Originally, Fin5 Orienteering Week was scheduled for July 5-10, 2020.
The transfer was decided unanimously by the club organizing the competition, Kuusamon Erä-Veikot, and the Finnish Orienteering Federation. In addition, the issue was discussed with the partner club, Posion Pyrintö and the main partners of the event. In connection with the decisions and information, the aim was to work together with the Kainuu Orienteering Week, which was to be held from 28 June to 3 July 2020 in Suomussalmi. In both weeks, there is strong cooperation with various partners and actors regarding the arrangements.
– We have been closely monitoring the coronavirus situation since March and have been considering various options for implementing Orienteering Week. The Finnish government has made significant restrictions on the movement of people and the organization of events. It was announced last week that public events for more than five hundred people will be banned until the end of July. In the end, this was such information that the board of Kuusamon Erä-Veikot ry had to make this necessary transfer decision for next year, says Seppo Linjakumpu, Secretary General of the Fin5 2020 event.
– The organization of the event for 2000-3000 people involved many different risks for the health of the public, participants, helpers and the local population, as well as for the financial success of the event, so there was no possibility to organize Orienteering week this summer, says competition director Antti Häkämies.
– The transfer of the event is a bad setback for the regional economy of the Northeast region, as it was the largest single event in the region this summer. The week-long orienteering week brings vitality and vitality to the area, which unfortunately will now move on to the next year, Seppo Linjakumpu continues.
The registrations of the participants who registered for the Orienteering week will be transferred until 2021, because the organizing club will keep the already registered registrations and the initial participation fees valid. Regarding new registrations and possible cancellations, things will be announced later on the event website and on social media.
No new Fin5 event organizer had yet been appointed for 2021, so the transfer of the Orienteering week will therefore be smooth by a joint decision of the Finnish Orienteering Federation and Kuusamon Erä-Veikot Ry.
